An old postcard featuring the Walter E Allen Chrysler-Plymouth car dealership in Oklahoma City.

Walter E Allen Chrysler-Plymouth | Oklahoma City Historical Postcards

From my Oklahoma City postcard collection…

I can still recall the excitement of stepping into the Walter E Allen Chrysler-Plymouth dealership back in the day. Built in 1946, right at the corner of NW 13th and Harvey, this place was the epitome of modernity at the time. It boasted features like hydraulic hoists, which were pretty advanced for raising vehicles to work underneath.

The postcard image I’m looking at now is a throwback to around 1950, showing the dealership in all its glory. It’s fascinating to think that this building, which was a state-of-the-art automobile dealership back then, is still standing. It’s now the home to Harvey Bakery, but the memories it holds for car enthusiasts and locals alike are indelible.

My Memories of the Walter E Allen Chrysler-Plymouth Building

I have a personal connection to this place. I distinctly remember going there in 1956, after the dealership had already gone bankrupt in 1955. It must have been a Ford dealership for a while. But my memory is clear as day—I was there when the Ford Edsel was introduced, and it left quite the impression on me. It must have been repurposed as a Chevy dealership for a time because I also have vivid memories of a 1958 Chevy convertible that caught my eye there.

Driving around town used to be a ‘thing’ for a family activity — a leisure activity in its own right. Those drives after dinner with my parents weren’t just about getting from point A to point B; they were about the experience, the sights, and the sounds. And the cars, oh the cars! They were stars of the show, and dealerships like Walter E Allen’s were our stages.

For those of you who share a passion for the history of Oklahoma City, especially when it intersects with the evolution of real estate and local businesses, I hope this little trip down memory lane resonates with you. It’s amazing how much history can be packed into the walls of a building, isn’t it?
