The Belle Isle Power Plant described on the postcard as “America’s most beautiful power plant” may no longer stand, but it holds an important place in the history of Oklahoma City. It provided power for the streetcars that ran along Classen Boulevard up to Classen Circle.

Travel back in time to 1907, and you’d find a bustling city in need of reliable transportation. Thanks to the construction of the power plant, Streetcars on Classen Blvd quickly became the preferred mode of transportation for Oklahomans.

But the power plant didn’t just serve a practical purpose. Its location right next to the newly created Belle Isle Lake Park made it a popular destination for locals looking to escape the city heat. The park provided ample opportunities for outdoor fun, with sandy beaches perfect for a summer day dip. You could even rent a bathing suit for just 35 cents! It’s amazing to think that as the city grew and evolved, this little slice of history remained bustling with activity and excitement for generations to come.

In 1922, an amusement park was added to the island, complete with thrill rides, a carousel, and a dance pavilion. The park became an even greater draw for the region.

Sadly, the amusement park was closed, and the carousel burned down in 1928. The streetcars continued running until 1947, but the power plant was eventually torn down in 1999.

Today, the area where the power plant once stood is a bustling shopping center, but the history of Belle Isle Lake and its surrounding park remains an important part of Oklahoma City’s past.

Despite the power plant’s demolition, the postcard’s description of the building as “America’s most beautiful power plant” speaks to the grandeur and importance of the structure in its time.
