Oklahoma City Air Terminal — Oklahoma City Historical Postcards
From My Oklahoma City Postcard Collection…
Let me take you back to a moment in time – 1957, to be exact – when the National Air Show came to Will Rogers Field in Oklahoma City. This postcard shows how the terminal looked at that time.
I remember it vividly, taking my relatives to the airport before the show when a fighter plane broke the sound barrier and shattered all the windows in the terminal. As a 9-year-old, I was in awe of this machine’s power.
We returned to the air show the following week, and I was instantly hooked on flying. Little did I know that my dreams would be fulfilled a dozen years later.
The original terminal was replaced with version 1.0 of what we have today in the 1960s and was named Will Rogers World Airport.
It’s interesting to note that Oklahoma City has the only airport using ‘world’ in its name. The airport is also named after someone killed in a plane crash, but the location is not included in the name.
Flying has been my first love since that day, and it all began here at Will Rogers World Airport.
