Monkey Island, Oklahoma City Zoo — Oklahoma City Historical Postcards
From my Oklahoma City Postcard Collection…
Growing up in Oklahoma City, there were always plenty of things to do, but the zoo was definitely a favorite spot of mine. And out of all the exhibits and attractions, Monkey Island stands out in my mind as the most memorable. For 60 years, the island was a beloved feature of the zoo and a fun place for visitors to watch the playful primates swinging from tree to tree. It’s unfortunate that Monkey Island is no longer there, but the memories of those mischievous monkeys will always stick with me.
The Oklahoma City Zoo has a rich history dating back to its opening in 1904, even before the state was established. It first opened its doors in Wheeler Park with just a deer fawn as its first animal. By 1909, the zoo had expanded its collection to 125 animals.
The zoo has undergone several moves throughout its history, starting at Wheeler Park, then the old fairgrounds, and finally settling into its current location within Lincoln Park in 1925. Thanks to the Works Progress Administration, the Zoo Amphitheater was constructed in 1933 and serves as a popular concert venue today. It’s fascinating to look back at the zoo’s journey throughout the years and how it has grown and evolved into what it is today.
A historical landmark of the Oklahoma City Zoo, Monkey Island, has undergone significant changes over the years. In 1935, major expenditures were approved by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) to carry out renovation projects in the zoo, including Monkey Island. However, the exhibit had constant repair issues and sanitation problems for the animals. Consequently, the zoo authorities eliminated this exhibit in 1998 and decided to focus on building the Global Plaza entrance on the site.
