Boulevard Cafeteria — Oklahoma City Historical Postcards

From my Oklahoma City Postcard Collection…

Once known as the “Cafeteria Capital of the United States,” Oklahoma City was home to legendary eateries such as Lady Classen, Queen Ann, Anna Maude, Adair’s, Dobson’s, O’Mealey’s, and Boulevard Cafeteria. Only Boulevard Cafeteria remained, carrying on the legacy of this proud era in culinary history until 2015.

The History of The Boulevard Cafeteria

The cafeteria craze began with Anna Maude Smith, who established her namesake cafeteria with partner Bob Smith. As partnerships evolved, the vibrant cafeteria scene flourished. In 1948, Garland Arrington opened Boulevard Cafeteria. In 1956, John Schroer Sr. and Pat Denham took ownership, marking the beginning of the Schroer family’s involvement. The Schroer family eventually gained complete control of the cafeteria after Denham’s tragic death in 1960. The original Boulevard was at 111 Classen Dr., just south of Plaza Court.

At its peak in 1966, Oklahoma City had 23 cafeterias. The Schroer family transformed Boulevard Cafeteria into the first “restaurant-style” cafeteria, featuring comfortable seating and a more formal design. The family’s involvement continued to evolve, with sons Robert and John Schroer Jr. joining the business and venturing out to establish new eateries. They moved the Boulevard to the north side of Plaza Court, just west of what is now Stella.

After Robert Schroer died in 1989, his brother Bill took over Boulevard Cafeteria, continuing to operate it until he died in 1998. Bill’s wife, Malin, and their son Harrison have carried on the family tradition. Until 2015, the Boulevard Cafeteria stood as a testament to Oklahoma City’s vibrant culinary past and a symbol of resilience. Then, unfortunately, it was forced to close when the Schroers could not negotiate a lease.
