Fine Foods Restaurant — Oklahoma City Historical Postcards

From my Oklahoma City Postcard Collection…

Fine Foods Restaurant is a piece of Oklahoma City’s history that has been forgotten by many of us today. I have to say, I wish I had been around to try it out. Despite the name, this old postcard suggests more of a cozy, classic diner feel. And who doesn’t love a good diner? I can imagine the bustling downtown streets outside that little eatery, the sound of clinking dishes, and the patrons’ chatter. It’s a shame we can’t experience it now, but we can appreciate the legacy the Fine Foods Restaurant left behind.

Located at 330 West Grand (now Sheridan), this restaurant was in the heart of downtown Oklahoma City. Its prime location placed it across from the Hudson Hotel and Hotel Black and just a block west of the luxurious Biltmore Hotel. One can only assume that these nearby hotels provided a steady stream of clientele for the restaurant. However, the restaurant probably catered to local residents, as there were rooms above the establishment. With a prime location and a diverse customer base, this restaurant was likely a popular spot for visitors and locals alike.

There’s something about vintage architecture that just draws me in, especially when it comes to restaurants. The Fine Foods Restaurant, which was listed in a 1947 phone book, is likely of the same vintage as the Hudson and Black Hotels, which were built in the 1930s. It’s fascinating to think of the history that might be held in a place like that. Sadly, the Fine Foods Restaurant was destroyed during urban renewal in the 1970s, but its location now resides within the Myriad Gardens. The Hudson Hotel was also lost in this process, and the Hotel Black was replaced by the BOK building. I can only imagine how the Fine Foods Restaurant must have looked back then.
