Father’s Day 2023
Father’s Day is a special occasion that has been around for over 100 years. It’s a chance for us to show our dad’s how much we love and appreciate them, not just on this day but every day. But unfortunately, the importance of having an involved father can be overlooked too often.
On Father’s Day, we take the time to express our gratitude and admiration for Fathers who provide stability, guidance, and wisdom to their children throughout their lives. This fatherly influence can profoundly impact children by embodying essential values such as respect, responsibility, and hard work, helping create a solid foundation to easily navigate different stages in life.
Growing up, my dad seemed a little tougher than all the other dads I knew. But, he was an unmistakable presence with an aura of confidence that commanded respect from friends and family alike. My dad was always there for me, providing guidance and support in big and small moments. I wouldn’t trade these memories for anything; now more than ever, I recognize what an incredible gift it is to spend time with the people you love most.
Today, as we pause to celebrate Father’s Day, I want to tell my dad’s story.
Early Life
My father certainly saw many things during life, particularly with the incredible journey he began as a young man. He was born in 1902 in Bristow, OK. At sixteen years old, he quit school and left home to work the boomtown oil fields; this was no ordinary task at that time as things were quite wild – one had to be tough! Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, he worked from roustabout all the way up to driller for Phillips Petroleum, a true testament to his tenacity and leadership skills.
World War II
My father was a remarkable leader and a brilliant man long before he volunteered to fight in World War II. Though most men his age (40) were considered too old for combat, he enlisted with the Navy Seabees without hesitation. His experience and leadership were quickly noted, resulting in his promotion to Chief Petty Officer.
He was sent to Guadalcanal and was tasked with reconstructing Henderson Field, one of the most critical airstrips during the war. My father’s service in World War II profoundly impacted my life. His courage and determination continue to inspire me today. I will always admire his bravery and strive to continue to make him proud. His hard work, dedication, and leadership have been instilled in me since childhood and shaped who I am today. He was a man of honor and integrity.
Post War
When my dad returned from serving his country, he met my mom – a sophisticated woman who tried bringing out his softer side. Despite being “a little rough around the edges,” they hit it off and married soon after their first meeting in 1946. I came along in 1947, and our family of three enjoyed all the ’50s had to offer.
I definitely miss the life lessons from my dad. His stories from his time in the oilfield and during The Great Depression were always funny yet informative—I learned so much about finances! Depression-era parents really could impart those lessons. But it doesn’t compare to the memories of him telling us stories of when he served in World War II. Those always had a powerful impact on me and gave me a greater appreciation for all the sacrifices. I just miss those times together.
During this time, my mom and dad began acquiring rental properties, and he maintained them. It seemed he could do just about anything with his hands. I tagged along a lot and thought this was my introduction to real estate. Sadly, he passed away in 1964 after a 7-year illness when I was only 16. It was a tough time for us all. But even though he’s no longer with us, my dad’s legacy of courage and resilience lives on. He always reminded us to stay strong and cherish the people we love, and that’s a lesson I carry with me to this day.
Father’s Day
My dad was a remarkable man and leader; his courage and resilience legacy still lives with me today. His stories from the oilfield during The Great Depression and those from his time in World War II have profoundly impacted my life. I am forever grateful for all he taught me about hard work, dedication, leadership, integrity, and value the people you love most. This Father’s Day is incredibly bittersweet because although he isn’t here anymore to share it together physically, I can remember him through memories that will live on forever. So let us take this day to honor my father and all fathers who embody these same qualities – may they be remembered throughout eternity!
