Occasionally I get the question, ‘why isn’t my house in the newspaper?’ Homeowners can get upset that their home isn’t being advertised in the local paper.
They need to realize that print advertising when selling your home is one of the least effective ways of marketing a property. Very few qualified buyers are using the newspaper to find their home. Just take a look at the ever shrinking real estate section of The Oklahoman and you’ll see very few agents are advertising homes for sale.
In 2008, 3% of buyers found their home in a newspaper and it’s getting smaller every year. This is a national number and I suspect it’s even smaller here. I’ve been a Realtor in Oklahoma City for 15 years now and have advertised in the newspaper for 14 of those (I quit last year). I can not attribute any sale I’ve made, and it’s been well over 1,000, to a newspaper ad.
This is not to mention the expense. It’s well known that The Oklahoman is one of the most expensive papers to advertise in throughout the United States. Most of our agents in Paradigm AdvantEdge don’t run newspaper ads, yet still as a company, we spent over $100,000 last year for newspaper ads. That’s crazy!!!! I’ve advertised for the last month with Facebook ads and had nearly 2,000,000 impressions. One can’t buy 2,000,000 impressions in the newspaper. I can’t begin to comprehend how much someone would have to spend to achieve that and how long it would take! Those 2,000,000 impressions on Facebook — $200. Maybe a 1/16 page ad in the paper.
Another pet peeve of mine is what the newspaper does to my pictures. I pride myself in talking great real estate photos. But, by the time you get it sized down to fit an affordable ad and made it black and white because color’s too expensive, you can’t tell what the picture is of. One house looks just the same as another one in the paper. A blurry blob!
In 2009, over 90% of home buyers used the internet in their home search. Isn’t that where you want your home to be featured?
