The 11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month
This is the date and time from 1918 when the Armistice was signed ending World War I. In 1919 President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed it Armistice Day and it has been celebrated ever since. In 1954 it was changed to Veterans Day to honor all veterans, not just World War I vets.
Freedom Is Not Free

To me this picture is the epitome of Veterans day. This is Joseph Ambrose, an 86 year old World War I veteran attending the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in 1982. He is holding the flag that covered the casket of his son, who had been killed in the Korean War.
